Bread Kneads Owner Named to Economic Task Force

Kelly McClurkin, owner and operator of Bread Kneads, has been named to an economic development task force for Findlay and Hancock County.  She is one of eight named members, with one remaining to be announced.

 A joint venture between Greater Findlay, Inc., Hancock County, and the City of Findlay, the task force was created to spearhead economic development in the area, determine which person should direct the effort, and how it should be funded.

According to a statement issued by all three entities, officials have set June 30 as the deadline for producing "a clear and unified direction of economic development in the community." With 26 days left, some consider that a tall order, considering the varied opinions.

 Members of the group were chosen by all three entities, with McClurkin being named to the task force by Mayor Pete Sehnert.  The remaining member will be named by the Hancock County Commissioners.

Chow NOW with Findlay NOW Magazine

Each month, Findlay NOW Magazine hosts a Chow NOW lunch at a Findlay restaurant. Patrons vote for their favorite charities. A randomly-drawn ballot determines the winner of a donation on behalf of Findlay NOW. The next Chow NOW will take place on Wednesday, June 2nd, 11:30am-1pm at The Red Pig Inn.. For a full list of charities that appear on the Chow NOW ballot, visit Findlay NOW Magazine online and navigate to page 7. Patrons are welcome to write in a Findlay-area 501(c)(3) organization if they do not see it listed.

Riverside Pool to Serve Vito's Pizza

With Summer comes fun in the sun, swimming, and...pizza? 

Riverside Pool is slated to open for the season this Saturday, with operations having been taken over by the Findlay Family YMCA.  While the snack bar will still be serving the standard fare of candy bars, sodas, and chips, there will also be something more substantial for pool-goers: Vito's Pizza. 

Slices of either pepperoni or cheese pizza will go for $1 each, as will everything else at the snack bar.  This is keeping in accordance with the change in admission price from last year's $4 per person to only $1 per person this year.  The Findlay Family YMCA wants to increase the community's usage of the pool, as well as provide a safe, wholesome environment for kids while they are out of school; they hope that lowering prices across the board would make the pool a more affordable destination for all.

Riverside Park Pool, located at 231 McManness Ave., will open for the season at 1 p.m. this Saturday, May 29th. Daily admission will cost $1 for a youth, $3 for an adult and $5 for families. Season passes for the public, which can be obtained at the YMCA, are $50 for youth, $75 for adults and $115 for families.

If you happen to stop by the snack bar, grab a couple of slices for us.

Chuck E. Cheese Development Moving Right Along

As we reported previously,  Chuck E. Cheese has plans to build a $3 million dollar restaurant in Findlay, slated for completion in late 2010 or early 2011.  Our previous post centered on their request for funding from the Findlay Revolving Loan Fund, and now the plans are up for review.

Findlay City Planning Commission today will review a site plan for a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant on 912 Interstate Drive, across the street from Carmike Cinemas. The commission will meet at 9 a.m. today in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building. The restaurant plans were filed by developer George Whitson.

Findlay To Gain A Second Arby's

For those of you who are always "Thinking Arby's," there is great news on the horizon:

Findlay will receive a $221,000 grant from the state to pay for machinery and equipment for an Arby's restaurant to be built this summer in front of Meijer, 2200 Tiffin Ave.

The state is granting the money because the restaurant is expected to employ 16 people full time, the State Development Department reported.

Fifteen of the jobs will be available for low- and moderate-income people.

A site plan for the restaurant, just west of Spruce Court and on the north side of Tiffin Avenue, was approved last November by the Findlay City Planning Commission.

Fins To Host Weekly Sunday Buffet

Beginning this Sunday, April 25th, Fins Seafood and Grille will be hosting a weekly Sunday buffet from 10am to 2pm.  This week's featured buffet items will include:

Two Men Arrested For Breaking Into Oler's Soda Machines

A couple of guys, who were up to no good, started making trouble in the neighborhood...

OK, so it wasn't exactly a crime worthy of the Fresh Prince theme song, but these two geniuses couldn't ignore the siren call of the coin-filled soda machines outside Oler's Restaurant and Drive-Thru:

Two Findlay men were jailed on felony charges after reportedly breaking into a soda machine early Tuesday, according to the Findlay Police Department.  Kenneth McDaniel, 24, and his cousin, Jaerrod McDaniel, 19, were charged with felony possession of criminal tools, city police said.  Kenneth McDaniel also was charged with escape, and both men were cited for a first-degree misdemeanor charge of tampering with coin machines, authorities reported.

Police said officers responded to a report of two males attempting to break into a pop machine at 4:57 a.m. Tuesday at Oler's, 700 Lima Ave. Both suspects were taken to the police department for processing.  While being taken into the station, Kenneth McDaniel allegedly broke the grip of an officer, police reported. The officer gave chase and quickly apprehended the suspect, police said. Following a brief struggle, McDaniel was subdued and suffered minor injuries, police reported.  The officer was unhurt.

Both suspects were being held Tuesday at the Hancock County jail.

The moral of the story? Don't be a thieving idiot!  And, if that's just not in the cards, how about not trying to fight the cops who are arresting you...that tends to piss them off.

On a side note: are we the only ones who noticed that The Courier repeated some variation of the phrase, "police reported,"  after almost ever statement in the article? And we thought we used the word, "however" too often.

Update: $1000 Reward Offered For Info On Subway Robbery

Findlay-Hancock County Crime Stoppers has offered a reward in the case of the Subway robbery we reported on earlier this week.

At about 11:30 p.m. Saturday an armed robbery occurred at Subway restaurant, 753 W. Trenton Ave. A white male, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and stocky, entered the business, brandished a handgun and demanded money, according to Findlay police. The employee complied and the suspect fled the business.

The man was wearing an unzipped black sweatshirt, a black T-shirt and a stocking cap with a bill. His face was partially covered by sunglasses and a bandana around his mouth.

Any information about this or any other crime that leads to an arrest or indictment may result in a $1,000 reward.

Trenton Ave. Subway Restaurant Robbed At Gunpoint

It seems as if the news is full of restaurant-related crime this morning.  In addition to the Saturday arrest at Jed's BBQ and Brew,  the following story appeared in today's paper:

The Subway restaurant at 753 W. Trenton Ave. was robbed at about 11 p.m. Saturday by a man brandishing a firearm, according to a report from the Findlay Police Department.

The employee complied with the suspect's demands for money, and the robber fled with an undisclosed amount of money, according to police. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Police describe the suspect as a white male, early to mid-20s, about 5 foot, 5 inches tall, with a stocky build. He was wearing a black sweatshirt and a black-billed stocking cap.

Man Arrested At Jed's BBQ & Brew On Weapons Charges

The Findlay Police Department  was called to Jed's BBQ & Brew this Saturday, April 3rd, ultimately taking a man into custody.  Arrested for carrying a concealed weapon inside the restaurant, the offender has been charged with two felonies.

Nathan A. Nisley, 27, of McComb, was found by police in the restaurant's parking lot but did not stop when ordered, police said. He was taken to the ground and secured, and a loaded 9 mm handgun was found in Nisley's waistband.

Nisley was arrested and taken to the emergency room of Blanchard Valley Hospital after complaining of a head injury.

He was treated and released and then incarcerated at Hancock County Justice Center, the police report states.

Nisley has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a third-degree felony, and illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor establishment, a fifth-degree felony.

Trial Delayed In Vito's Pizza Robbery

Back in November, Vito's Pizzeria (located at 1500 N. Main St.) was robbed at knifepoint. However, the trial date for the suspect (originally slated for May 17th), has been delayed.

Christian T. Kryling, 38, was scheduled for trial May 17, but Hancock County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Niemeyer agreed Thursday to delay the trial until June 14 at the request of Kryling's attorney, Christopher Zografides.

Police said Kryling entered the pizzeria wearing a mask, brandished a knife and demanded money from the cash register. He fled on foot after the clerk gave him money and was arrested by police the next day, police said.

Kryling was indicted for aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. He is being held in the Hancock County jail on a $250,000 bond.
